| Cody Smith competes in the Saddle Bronc event at the Brownwood Rodeo | ||||||||
| Brownwood Rodeo Grounds, Brownwood, TX, July 26, 2003. 8:33 p.m.
After such a long absence from all things Texan, it was time to go get in touch with my inner redneck. To that end, I spent a week at Rising Star with the parents that involved everything from running a tractor to shooting a rabbit for dinner. It was wonderful. I even picked up a cowboy hat, which was much more difficult than I thought it would be (you try finding a size 7 7/8 hat in Brownwood). The Brownwood Rodeo closed out our week, and it was a chance to connect with that which is truly Texan. Now where's my Lone Star... |

| Dave Navarro, guitarist for the recently reincarnated Jane's Addiction, on stage at Lollapalooza 2003 | ||||||||
| Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, Selma, TX, August 9, 2003. 9:57 p.m.
I got a better view of Lollapalooza than you did. Sorry -- it's just one of the perks of being in the business. The area behind the barricades between the front of the crowd and the stage is occupied by both the security guards trying to keep you away from the stage and photographers like me (well, at least for the first 3 songs). Concerts are always fun, even if they're exceedingly tricky with their rapidly shifting stage lights. And unlike the Warped Tour, I wanted to see almost all the bands at Lollapalooza. Thanks are in order to the Statesman for sending me. Phew! This update is by far the largest ever, which is a direct result of me putting it off for a few months. Next time I'm going to have to stay more current with these things. Oh, there is one more thing before I go... |

| This is the August 11 issue of Sports Illustrated. That's my photo of Roy Williams. This came as a complete surprise to me, and I only know about it because Bryce called me to ask "Dude, isn't this your photo in SI?"
To say I was happy about it is one of the bigger understatements of the year. They got my photo from the Associated Press, whom I sent it to after the Cotton Bowl on January 1 (which is how I didn't know about it). If you want to pick it up, it should be on the stands for a few more days -- it's the College Football Preview edition. It's going on my wall. That's all for now. I'm starting as an intern at the Austin American-Statesman on August 25th, so I should have no shortage of images this fall. - Alex |
