Cpt. Eloy Garza tends a simulated structure fire at the Edinburg Fire Department training field during an exercise on Monday night. The department trains annually to give new recruits the experience they need to do their jobs while staying safe, said Deputy Fire Chief Ubaldo Perez, adding, "This is where we need to make our mistakes, get it wrong, and then figure out how to do it right."
Perez estimated the temperature next to Garza at just under 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
